Arizona May Challenge Federal Rollback of Greenhouse Gas Rules
While the state’s response remains uncertain, at least one official has not ruled out taking legal action against the federal government.
On Thursday, Lee Zeldin announced the termination of the EPA’s 2009 endangerment finding, a rule originating from a 2007 Supreme Court decision that confirmed the agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases threatening public health. The finding has served as the legal foundation for emissions standards on vehicles, airplanes, power plants, and other major polluters.
The move by Donald Trump aligns with his broader agenda to roll back climate regulations affecting the auto and fossil fuel sectors. During his 2024 campaign, he reportedly told fossil fuel executives he would remove environmental rules to boost profits if they contributed $1 billion to his campaign.
Legal challenges are expected once the repeal is finalized, with Arizona among the states considering lawsuits. At a recent press briefing, Kirsten Engel said that pursuing court action is one of several options under review.
